Select Upgrade this PC now then click Next
Pre-requisite Task
When making significant changes to your computer such as updating the operating system, you should always backup. See links to resources about backing up by clicking the link for the respective version of Windows you are running: Windows XP , Windows Vista , Windows 7 , Windows 8/8.1
- Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
- Restart a few times then try again.
- Disable General USB Devices (example — Smart Card Reader).
- If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
- Perform a clean boot , restart then try again.
- If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
- If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
- If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
- If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.
- If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

The USB thumb drive needs to be at least 8 GBs in size.

Ok i’ve fixed it! Luckly I have an old trustworthy windows 7 laptop laying around.. I used it to download windows 10 on a usb stick using the windows creation tool. It gives you the option to » create a copy for another pc «
I was able to acces the usb on the «broken pc» and install windows 10 without losing any data!

If you can’t download via Windows Update then try an alternate way to get Windows 10.
If you want to see if you can create a .iso for Windows 10 and burn it to DVD, or USB, but without any Windows 10 Product Key you can only use it to upgrade from Windows 8.1, or Windows 7 SP1.
Start Windows 10 setup by launching it from within Windows 8.1, or 7, click on the Setup.exe. This will ensure that you upgrade Windows 8.1 etc. to Windows 10.
If you boot from DVD via the Windows 10 DVD you will be given the choice of a Custom install, or an Upgrade install. A Custom install will take you down the Clean Install patch which is no good to you (initially) as you don’t have a Windows 10 Product Key.
In Windows 8.1 you can convert a .iso to a bootable DVD by right-clicking on it and selecting «Burn to disk».

After performing the Upgrade install from Windows 8.1 etc. to Windows 10, you can later clean install Windows 10 (on the same machine) without any Product Key in any subsequent installs, but you must have upgraded from Windows 8.1, 7, first.
