1703 windows 10 fix

Problems with Windows 10 Creators Update 1703

Tried multiple times to get the latest major update to install. It seems to download OK (gets to 100%), spends ages configuring the update (gets to 100%), shuts down and does some more configuring in the process (gets to 100%) and then, once it finally restarts, gets to some sort of low-res windows setup screen and almost instantly reboots again and finally gets back to windows 10 with an error about updates failed to install.

Looking at the event viewer, I see the following in the setup log

Windows update could not be installed because of error 2147942402 «The system cannot find the file specified.» (Command line: «»C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe» Windows8-RT-KB2937636-x86 /quiet»)

I have tried various command line tools to check for system errors (DISM, sfc) and they all come back with no errors. Ran a genuine Microsoft script to clean up and remove old update files and settings. All to no avail. The pc is a 3 month old i7 with lots of storage space / ram that was a clean windows 10 install when I got it so no old windows 8 files on there in theory.

Any ideas? Am not in the mood for a clean reinstall.

Hi best to check with your computers manufacturer to check if it’s compatible for the upgrade they should have a list to check if your model is on there. Did you download using the upgrade assistant? Or from m.s download site?

I suggest you create the media and do a clean install of the creator installed on it you should have no problems that way.

Great! Thanks for your feedback.

Hi — I have tried using the upgrade assistant but again, no luck. I will contact the company I bought the pc off but everything was compatible with the last version of windows 10 up until yesterday — all components are less than 4 months old and/or using latest drivers and firmware.

Having only just spent several days setting up the PC when I got it (extensive software installations — as in 50+ hours of installs / 200+ programs) I think I’ll just pass on this ‘creators’ update rather than do yet another install and see whether this is fixed in a later update — the lack of error messages means it’s almost impossible to troubleshoot the issue and I’ve already wasted many hours trying all the suggested solutions from around the internet.

Hi — DID IT!! But not without one further hitch 🙂

I downloaded the creators update ISO full version.. re-did the update repairs etc before commencing the update from an ISO mounted in windows 10. it got to the same stage as before and failed BUT it gave a new error message saying there was a problem with SAFE mode installation plus a long list of digits that I forgot to write down but did google — users with a similar problem with the anniversary update reported that they solved this error by disconnecting their SECOND SSD drives (I too have 2 SSD drives). So I opened the case, pulled the SATA cable from my non-OS SSD and rebooted, restarted the update from the ISO and this time it all worked!

The second SSD wasn’t the boot drive but USED to be, so I’m guessing their was a problem with the drive’s settings.

After 20 hours the update went through in about an hour with one driver problem (an old printer thats not actually connected or in use).

thanks for the help and suggestions

Spoke too soon — after setting up Creators Update and updating a few programs and drivers (Nvidia, mouse driver for Razer Naga) I started to suffer issues with programs crashing and specifically, severe intermittent problems with right click context menu corruption / disappearing altogether. using shellexview and cc cleaner to try and troubleshoot, I had to disable ALL non-MS context menu items to get it working MOST of the time.

In the end, I just got so frustrated I rolled back to pre creator update. I will now wait and see if a new version is launched over the next month or so OR set aside a week to reinstall from scratch 🙁

Windows 10 was released by Microsoft on July 2015. year. Few weeks ago Microsoft released new version of Windows 10 operating system, named Windows 10 Creators update, version 1703. Previous versions of Windows 10 are 1507, 1511 and 1607. Windows 10 Creators update will be delivered to your machines if your Windows 10 has automatic updates enabled. After Microsoft delivered Windows 10 Creators update to your machine, you need to install it. You can read about installing Windows 10 Creators update to your machine at reference. There are different experiences by ends users regarding updating Windows 10 to new version. One of issue is impossibility to finish installation, it got to 23%, 27%, 75% or some other part of installation, and then stayed there for few hours (from two to 10 hours by end user experience), at the end it freezes (circle stopped spinning). User get notification that update was unsuccessfull and previous version of operating system was being restored. After restoring Windows 10 to previous version, there are another issue, system is not working stable, it is extremely laggy, task manager is accessible, there aren’t system restore checkpoints, because Windows deleted them during restore to previous version. There are few solution you can try to troubleshoot this issue.

Method 1: Troubleshoot Windows update

  1. Hold the Windows Key and Press R. Type control panel and Click OK
  2. Choose System and Security
  3. Under Security and Maintenance click Troubleshoot common computer problems

  4. Under Troubleshoot choose Windows Update

  5. Click Run the Troubleshooter

Method 2: Uninstall third-part antivirus

Third-party anti-virus programs are known to cause problems while installing Creator updates. You need to uninstall third party anti-virus programs through Add/Remove programs. Here are the steps to uninstall third-party antivirus program, please check reference, solution 3.

Method 3. Disable your Firewall

Firewall is controlling incoming and outgoing network traffic. Sometimes, disabling Firewall can solve issues we have during updating or installing Windows 10 operating system. Here are the steps to disable firewall:

  1. Hold the Windows Key and Press R. Type control panel and Click OK
  2. Open Windows Firewall by clicking to him
  3. On the left side of window click Change notification settings
  4. Choose network profile you’re using (private, public or domain) and click Turn of windows Firewall (not recommended)

Method 4: Disable Fast boot

Fast boot is increasing Windows 10 boot performance. You can enable or disable fast boot. To disable fast boot you need to do steps as following:

  1. Windows logo + X
  2. Choose Power Options
  3. On the left side of windows click Choose what the power buttons do
  4. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable which will allow you to change settings
  5. Under Shutdown settings make sure Turn on fast startup is disabled.

Method 5: Download Windows 10 1703 ISO through Media Creation Tool

There are two ways for updating or installing Windows 10 to your machine. One is using Windows update from Control Panel or Settings, and second is using Microsoft Creation Tool. Media Creation Tool allows you to upgrade your PC through Windows update or throught ISO file, which you need to download and burn to USB flash drive. There are few steps you need to do:

  1. Open browser and visit website https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
  2. Click Download tool now, which will download Media Creation Tool (17.5MB) to your machine
  3. Double click Media Creation Tooland clickAccept
  4. Choose „Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO fiole) for another PC“
  5. Select langauge, arhitecture and Windows 10 edition
  6. Click Next
  7. Choose which media to use by clicking to USB flash drive (It needs to be at least 4 GB)
  8. Click Next
  9. Choose Removable drive and click Next

After Media Creation Tool has finished this procedure, you need to boot your machine to USB flash drive and try updating your machine. In case you have the same problem, you need to access files in ISO by mounting them, and running setup.exe. Follow the procedure of updating your machine to Windows 10 Creators update.

Some PCs may need a long time to download Windows 10, depending on the quality of the internet connection, the amount of data to move and the computer’s speed. In some cases, it may take as long as 24 hours, so please be patient. If your hard drive is still flashing, there’s a good chance it is still making progress.

There are a few points in particular where the progress bar may slow down significantly enough that you may believe that progress has stopped:

  • At the black screen with a blue circle at the 30-39% range, while Windows is downloading all dynamic updates for Windows 10
  • Again at 96%, when Windows is busy backing up your data
  • And at the message “It’s taking a bit longer than usual to set up your device, but it should be ready soon”

This is general rule for Microsoft updates. We can leave this or remove.
