This is a connectivity assistant that enables you to configure and enhance the network and Internet settings according to your needs and preferences

Designed for ThinkPad computer systems, Access Connections is a connectivity assistant signed by Lenovo to allow users easy modification of the network and Internet settings based on predefined profiles.

Straightforward user interface

The looks are simple and to the point, with a set of three tabs for defining the type of Internet connection, accessing previously created profiles or getting into the configuration panel.

The options panel lacks the complexity users might usually associated with this kind of program. One of the choices is to disable the wireless LAN radio when it is not active and to automatically delete the profiles that have not been active for a specific period of time (the default setting is 30 days).

Also, in order to have constant information on the status of the application you can have it shown in the system tray icon.

Advanced tools

ThinkVantage Access Connections supports LAN, wireless LAN, mobile, modem and WiMAX Internet connections.

Switching to the advanced interface reveals that the program integrates a set of tools that can be used by more experienced users to detect connectivity problems.

There are diagnostic tools to check for the integrity of the packets as well as a trace route tool that allows checking the path of the connection and the delays occurring in transiting the network.

Additionally, there is an IP configuration utility that allows renewing the IP or releasing it, per each adapter available.

Restoring a lost connection can be done automatically by attempting to enable the available profiles in the order provided by the user.

Conclusion

ThinkVantage Access Connections is flexible enough for the beginner user to work with it with no problems although it is more suitable for more experienced users, for whom it can be a real asset.

Access connection lenovo windows 10

Access Connections is not supported for any Microsoft OS beyond Win 7.

Is this documented anywhere?

Was this announced somewhere?

Looking for some official communication so we can take appropriate action.

Re: Future of Access Connections on Windows 10

This is not the EXACT press release you wanted. This is from win 7 to win 8.

It amounts to uninstall win 7 access connections before win 8 upgrade.

If you dont find access connections on win 8 support page, the support has ended.

This supports moderator comment.

I would suspect win 8 added functions that access connections provided on win 7 thus no need for a Lenovo version.

The win 10 page from Lenovo does not make this change apparent. It does not.

An official press release would be nice, vs find it if you can. This would make our lifes better.

Re: Future of Access Connections on Windows 10

Thanks sclexman — good enough for me.

If I hear back from our Lenovo rep. I’ll let you know.

Did you ever hear back from your Lenovo rep?

Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 do not have network profiles. They don’t automatically switch between wired/wireless. So no, Microsoft did not obviate the necessity of Access Connections by including the functionality natively.

Re: Future of Access Connections on Windows 10

They don’t automatically switch between wired/wireless.

Windows 8 and 10 have a connection priority setting for various connection modes which will achieve the automatoic switching you are seeking.

Yes, I did and they didn’t go into any real detail about why LAC was not supported beyond Windows 7.

The impression was that it was a cost-cutting measure especially when I take into considueration my last interaction with Lenovo early in 2015 on LAC:

  • I called Lenovo to support to ask some questions about something I saw in the documentation.
  • The support person was quick to say that Lenovo didn’t provide support for LAC, especially anything regarding deployments or enterpise configuration.
  • Thinking maybe that particular person didn’t know what they were talking about, I reached out to our account executive and technical sales engineer.
  • They also confirmed that Lenovo didn’t provide any additional guidance or support, beyond what’s already in the documentation, on LAC configuration and deployment.

We’re already pushing the wireless configuration via GPO so all domain-joined machines, and in the proper OU, have the wireless profile setup for them automagically. However, we were only looking to LAC to ensure Ethernet was the preferred adapter and we took matters into our own hands:

  1. Using nvspbind to ensure the proper binding order for adapters and protocols
  2. Rolled our own powershell script to disable wireless when Ethernet is connected.

We’ve been testing the script for months now and are ready to push it out globally.
