How to drive a new snake

First of all, a few words about trajectory movementwhich we will use. The width of the corridor is 3.9 meters. In practice, this means that the corridor is about 2 times wider than a training car, i.e. there is enough space for maneuvering.

How to make turns

This article will focus on doing the exercise " Adjustable intersection"on the race track. This exercise is one of the most simple, because it does not imply any complicated maneuvering.

Regulated intersection is used during the exam starting from September 1, 2016. At the same time, this exercise is applied only on automated autodromes, which in practice are quite few.

Nevertheless, we will consider how to correctly drive an adjustable intersection. Let's get started

Exercise platform  "Regulated intersection" is presented below:


A crossroads is the intersection of two two-lane roads. The configuration of the intersection depends on the race track. Some autodromes use a T-junction.

The width of all roads is 7 meters, the width of the lane for movement is 3.5 meters. It corresponds to the width of the strip in real road conditions, so there is plenty of room for maneuvers for a driver candidate.

The radius of rounding at the intersection is 4 meters, the distance between the pedestrian crossing and the STOP line is 1 meter.

The correct implementation of most of the exercises, which every future car owner must practically pass, causes many difficulties and mistakes, especially at the initial stage. The main task is to monitor the arrival of the car in the box. At that moment, when next to the rear door on the right side will seem another pole - you will need to stop again.

To exercise was performed correctly, the driver must unscrew the steering device to the limit in the right direction and continue driving. It makes no sense to drive into the cramped space in real life, because then you simply will not open the doors.

Very often, the conditions of megacities with a constant shortage of space dictate their conditions for storing vehicles. One of my students had such a tight garage that, having put a car in it, he could not open the door in it. He found such a way out of this situation: driving back to the garage along the middle racks, he was convinced that the car was parallel to the walls of the garage, then turned off the engine, switched on a neutral gear, opened the door and left the car, then pushed it into garage manually and closed the gate. Departure from the garage happened in a similar way - the car was rolling out of the garage by the bumper, until it became possible to open the driver's door. Other drivers show the wonders of harmony and flexibility, managing to “leak” between the car and the wall of the garage with the narrowest gaps. When parking somewhere near a supermarket, you should not choose places where there will be minimal gaps between yours and neighboring cars - why should you once again risk damaging someone's board with an open door?

  Different instructors may call parking methods in different ways. Today in various driving schools there is no any unity in terminology at all. For example, recently at one of the training sites I witnessed how an instructor from one of the neighboring driving schools called the drive around the perimeter of the rectangle (straight-turn-straight-turn ...) when passing by the figure eight - this is a specific world view. For this reason, it seems to be worth deciphering any term in order to understand exactly what is meant, and not to find fault with the name of this term - they both named it and called it ...

The first way to park is reversing "2 × 2".

In general, you have probably met with such an exercise. Remember a 180 degree turn? When we reversed, turning the car at right angles between the chips, we actually drove into this very garage. The only difference is in the landmarks used - then it was a piece at the level of the rear bumper, remember?

Suppose you are driving along a straight road past the garage, leaving it on the right. Remembering that when reversing when turning the steering wheel all the way to the inside, the rear wheel travels about two meters radius about a radius, you need to retreat two meters from the garage and pull two meters beyond the garage. Thus, as shown in Figure 4.28, a square of 2 × 2 meters is formed between the car and the garage (hence the name of the parking method).

The complexity of this method lies in the fact that there are no clear guidelines, in general, you need to have a good idea of ​​your car in space. Therefore, first, turning back, you need to “aim” the rear corner of the car closest to the garage to the corner (B) of the garage. When the car takes an angle of about 60 degrees relative to the garage (position III in the figure), you will see in the right mirror that the car passes along the right side of the garage (B). After that, as you approach the state of parallelism of the garage walls, you will need to check the left side in the car’s left mirror — whether the car’s rear left corner passes by the corner (A) of the garage.

The difference from the reversal in this case is that you just need to put the wheels of the car directly and drive into the garage parallel to its walls on straight wheels.

Of course, if the place to park the car will not be to the right, but to the left of it, then all actions will be performed completely similarly, but in a mirror image.

The advantage of the “2 × 2” method is that it is quite simple, moreover, with a fairly frequent repetition of such races, the driver develops a feeling of movement of the car in space. The downside of this method is the need for a large area for arrival. As you already know, when you turn the car in reverse, there is a large swing, which means you need to make sure that you do not hit the wall or some other obstacle with the outside board of the car. It is best to leave a distance of at least one and a half meters from the car to this obstacle - then you definitely will not touch anything. If the necessary clearance is not, drive into the garage will not work. In addition, with this method of parking there are no clear guidelines, especially if you do not have to drive into the garage with walls, but on a marked asphalt road without neighboring cars - many in this case do not bother at all and sometimes even put the car across the road markings. When after a while the whole parking lot is occupied by cars, it is unclear how the car says clearly not in favor of its owner.

The second way to park is reversing "2 × 45".  It is used when you need to park the car in reverse under conditions when the passage between the rows of standing cars is quite narrow (sometimes even smaller in width than the length of the car - this situation is quite common).

Imagine two rows of transversely parked cars with a passage between them, and the width of this passage is approximately the length of your car or even less (as a rule, two oncoming cars can still disperse). Suppose that there is an empty seat in the right from the car to a number of cars. As you can see in the figure, the “2 × 2” method cannot be used in this case - there will simply be no place to turn the wheels, since the car will immediately drive into the row of parked cars (fig. 4.30).

Unlike the previous method, in this case it is necessary to “pull over” the car close to the empty seat - about half a meter from the right row of parked cars. And you need to drive so much so as to equate the right rear-view mirror with the “right wall of the garage” - the side of the car parked to the right of the free space, as shown in the figure. An additional landmark - the average rack of your car should be located approximately in the center of the parking pocket (Fig. 4.31). This position is the starting point: as soon as the car has reached this position, start turning the steering wheel to the left as intensively as possible (if your car is equipped with a power steering, you can even turn the steering wheel on a standing car, since parking is tight).

Turning the wheels all the way to the left, you need, as if driving away from the garage, to make a preliminary swing for entry. In this case, the car should be at an angle of about 45 degrees from the previous direction (Fig. 4.32). Thus, you can drive a car to the left lane of cars so that the distance between the front left corner of your car and the parked car will be only half a meter, or even less.

After the car has reached an angle of 45 degrees relative to the previous direction, stopping or just before stopping, it is also urgent to begin to unscrew the steering wheel in the opposite direction - all the way to the right (Fig. 4.33). Unlike the “2 × 2” method, when the car, turning around, ran into an obstacle, in this case, as soon as you turn on the reverse and drive back, the left front corner of your car will immediately move away from the cars that are now standing before you. Thus, your car is reversing into a parking space.

As you can see (fig. 4.34), in order to drive into the garage, the car has to make two turns at 45 degrees (which, in fact, is reflected in the name of this method of parking). Rotate 90 degrees can not be performed in a limited area. If it is divided into two stages, the result will be optimal. The advantages of this method are that it does not take much space to complete the entire maneuver, and also that there are clear guidelines. As in the first case, if the parking place is located not to the right, but to the left of the car, then all actions will be performed completely similarly, but in a mirror image.

With a back to the garage, we figured out. Sometimes, when the passage between the garages (or rows of cars) is wide enough, you can drive in the garage (or into the parking lot between the cars) in front. Putting a car into the garage in front gear is considered by many to be more preferable for the reason that in this case the exhaust pipe of the car will be closer to the exit, which means that the garage will be less polluted and some part of the truth is there is. Anyway, if there is enough space for a turn, nothing prevents to drive into the garage in front.

The first way to enter the garage in a forward direction is as follows: a car drives into the garage with one maneuver. In order for this to work, you need to understand that the turning radius of the inner rear wheel of an average passenger car is about three meters, that is, it is necessary that the car be at a distance of at least three meters from the garage (fig. 4.35) - otherwise just won’t get to where it should be, and it will not work the first time (even without options). Thus, having approached the garage at a distance of three meters, level off the near edge of the entrance with the front wheels, as shown in the figure.

As soon as the car has taken the initial position (position I in Figure 4.36), it is necessary to immediately turn the steering wheel all the way towards the garage (in the example shown, to the right). At first it will seem that the car is driving past the garage (position II), but this is not terrible, because in the end the car will still hit the front axle in the garage (position III). Naturally, when the front part of the car enters the garage, the steering wheel must be returned to the center position in order for the car to continue to drive on straight wheels. As a result, the rear axle of the car "cuts off" and gets into the garage very clearly (position IV).

The complexity of this method lies in the fact that you need to be able to mentally build an arc along which the car will move, and know for sure that with such a turning radius the car is guaranteed to get into the garage without touching the outside angle with the turning angle.

From driving learning experience
  One of my former pupils - in the past, a military helicopter pilot, never called in to his place in the underground parking lot from the first approach: “In the air, I understand where I go, but I don’t understand here ...” Indeed, not having enough experience, especially in limited space, there is a big risk when driving into the garage in front of one drive to touch the wall with the corner of the car or peel off the board. Therefore, if you are not sure about something, it is better to refrain from risky actions.

Driving into the garage in front is a special case of herringbone parking. As I have already mentioned, with this method of parking, cars stand at the edge of the roadway at an angle, as a rule, 45 degrees to the curb. If you need to park in such a parking lot, it is necessary, as in the case of parallel parking, to get closer to the parked cars at a distance of about half a meter, and then, picking up the middle pillar of your car with a protruding corner of the parked car (see Figure 4.37), turn the steering wheel to the right - the car “dives”, the rear wheels, as usual, “cut”, and the car, if everything was done correctly, after aligning the steering wheel on straight wheels, will drive up to the curb with its right front corner. At the same time, the gap between the starboard side of your car and the left side of a parked car will automatically become sufficient for opening the door.

In order to make the previous way of entering the garage in limited conditions more secure, it can be divided into two stages - this will be the second way to check in front garage "2 × 45". This method is similar to the exercise "U-turn in the overall yard." Driving up to the garage you need not to “cuddle” to his side, but on the contrary - to keep at some distance. After the car reaches the middle pillar with the middle of the garage (all this is rather arbitrary and approximately - you need to “shoot” individually for each specific situation), you should start turning, aiming, roughly speaking, in the garage to your neighbor (fig. 4.39).

When the front part of the car arrives at the next garage, its rear part will take a position somewhere on the line of the garage we need, that is, the car will turn about 45 degrees to the previous direction of travel (Fig. 4.40) will make a swing for the next turn. At this point, you need to turn on the reverse and at the very first centimeters of movement begin to turn the steering wheel all the way in the opposite direction.

Since the rear axle of the car remains approximately at the level of our garage, and the front gradually moves to the middle of the garage, the car at a certain moment reaches an angle of 90 degrees from its original direction, that is, it is oriented to enter the garage (Fig. 4.41). It remains only to return the steering wheel to the center position and just drive into the garage on straight wheels.

The general driving pattern for a 2x45 forward ride into the garage is shown in Figure 4.42. This method of arrival is fully justified. If you feel that, coming from the first time, there is a risk to catch, it is better not to tempt fate, but to turn back, trimming the car to the desired parallelism with the walls of the garage, and then calmly drive into the garage on straight wheels.

Entering the garage on direct wheels is also preferable because maneuvering directly in the garage is not only an easy task, but also a dangerous one. As a rule, each garage at the entrance has a fit (Fig. 4.43). It was this attack that caused many stripped sides of cars. Usually the car, trying to call in on attacks, rests and stops. Not enough experienced driver does not leave attempts to call in, but at the same time he still needs to rotate the steering wheel to direct the car to the right place. In this regard, it is very important to align the car before entering the garage, and it is equally important to be able to start uphill, which we talked about in one of the previous chapters.

  Generally, if you need to call in on the attacks, or, for example, on the curb (sometimes such a need also arises), in no case do you need to rest on it, and then try to push the car further. If you have already pressed the wheels to the fit or curb, roll back a bit (if the car has an automatic transmission, turn on the reverse gear and return back literally 10-15 cm). After this, with a sufficiently powerful acceleration, you need to “push” the car quite strongly, but not for long - to give the car an impetus to get through the obstacle. Thus, the front wheels are pushed first and the driver is convinced that the car enters the garage parallel to its walls. Then, when the rear wheels drive up, the driver again rather strongly, but briefly “pushes” the car, after which it drives out into an obstacle and the rear wheels. The driver can only get the car in the garage to the desired depth.

Board
Many drivers in order not to accidentally rest against the rear wall of the garage with a bumper, put tires. But, in my opinion, it’s best to lay a wooden beam about five centimeters thick across the garage (Fig. 4.44) - the bumper will not touch it, and after wheels are pressed into it, the car simply does not want to roll on (of course , do not fly into the garage in full sail - in this case no tires will help). Some prefer to hang various posters on the walls of the garage and orient themselves upon entering them. And my familiar helicopter pilot, whom I mentioned above, hung an eraser on a string on the ceiling of the garage, and calculated everything so that when the car drove the right distance, the eraser would knock on the center of the windshield. In general, there are a lot of landmarks that can and should be used, since the garage is quite a serious place in terms of driving.

DEPARTURE FROM THE GARAGE

Departure from the garage type parking (or actually from the garage) deserves separate consideration.

Suppose the car was put in front of the garage, therefore, it is necessary to drive out of it in reverse. You cannot turn the steering wheel in the garage, it must be straight, otherwise the car will certainly move its wing into the wall (or into the side of a nearby car if it happens in the parking lot). Ideally, getting into the car, you need to make sure that the front wheels are straight. You can also use the method that we considered in the section “Fundamentals of Reversing”, that is, looking at the windshield and starting to take back, make sure that the garage wall just moves away from the car, and does not shift to the side. On direct wheels, you need to drive out of the garage until the FRONT BUMPER of YOUR CAR is ON THE GARAGE DOOR LINE, that is, the car must almost completely leave the garage. Only then can you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right (depending on where you are going to go further). However, as a rule, the passage between the garages is not so wide that you can turn to the desired direction. Therefore, to save space and ensure safety, you need to turn back around to an angle of 45 degrees from the original direction, for this there is a good guideline - the continuation of the left side of your car should coincide with the angle of the garage (Fig. 4.45). After the car takes this position, turn on the first gear and, turning the steering wheel all the way in the opposite direction, go where you want.

As you can see, both at the entrance to the garage and when leaving it, the already familiar tactic “2 × 45” is used. That is, in principle, nothing new happens, only the scenery changes, and the car in space always moves in the same way.

If the car was put into the garage in reverse, then this is a completely familiar situation from the “Snake in front” exercise. All that needs to be done to leave the garage in this case is to drive on direct wheels until the middle rack reaches the edge of the garage (or the edge of the next car if the car leaves the parking), after which you can safely turn the steering wheel in any direction (fig. 4.46).

Its features has a departure from the parking lot "herringbone". Often cars are parked quite tightly to each other, and the moment when you can already turn the steering wheel may be different, depending on the specific situation. To leave a narrow corridor, as we already know, is necessary on straight wheels. At the same time, in order to turn the wheels to turn in the situation with “herringbone” parking, on the one hand you need to level the rear bumper with the rear bumper of the right neighboring car (A), and on the other hand with the front bumper with the rear bumper of the left neighboring car (B ) (Fig. 4.47).

However, depending on the angle at which cars are installed at the curb and how long the cars are standing next to each other, it may happen that the rear bumper has already passed the neighbor on the right (A), and the front bumper of the neighbor on the left has not yet passed. It is very often possible to observe a picture when the driver of a car leaving a parking lot, starting to turn around, stops very early, without reaching parallelism to the road. The fact is that, although driving out to complete parallelism requires more space, then, as soon as the car goes completely onto the road, you can turn on the left direction indicator and, looking in the left mirror, calmly start ahead. If the car does not reach the parallel position of the road, it often turns out that there is not enough room for turning on the road ahead - the driver starts backing again and continues to “fidget” back and forth until finally he leaves completely. In my opinion, this is the worst possible option - to leave the parking lot (as well as drive into it) should be, if possible, for one approach, without disturbing others.

How to park in reverse at the site:
    1. We are approaching the start line, stopping.
    2. Touch and slowly move forward.
      Our task is to drive the right side of the car as close as possible to the chip 1. It will be easier to park.
    1. Stopping at the front line (about 30 cm), turn on the rear speed, turn your head back and start moving, watching the right stand at the rear side of the car.
    2. Further actions vary depending on the car on which you are training. But they come down to that - to bring the rack to the edge of the rear wheel. The surest way to understand this position is to get out of the car, put the rack on the line of the rear edge of the wheel, a short distance from the car. And then go back to the car - and remember how it looks from the inside. You can also check the position of the rack using the right side mirror. In order to to park  it was convenient, it can be adjusted below the normal position.
    3. When the desired position is reached, unscrew the steering wheel all the way to the right side, while looking in the LEFT mirror.
      At the same time, the body of the car turns towards the parking space of the car (in our case, to the right).
  1. As soon as we see the chip number 2 in the left side mirror (the position is shown in the figure on the right) we stop. It is very important not to miss this moment, otherwise park properly  will be almost impossible.
  2. Now you need to align the steering wheel and move back.
    We look into the left side mirror of the car on the dotted line at the rear wheel. As soon as we crossed the line (we need to move a little bit), we stop again.
  3. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  4. We start driving in reverse. We look at the stands in front of the car, and imagine the carriageway. As soon as the car is located parallel to it, we stop.

Possible parking errors when trying to park properly:

There are a few errors that do not work. to park in reverseand the first time:

  • - If you hit a 1.3 or 4 rack (most likely)
  • - If not in the parking pocket of the car completely. Ie the projection of the car has not crossed the marking lines (the wheels are on the marking line, or the projection of the side mirror has not crossed it)

What is the snake exercise?

The exercise area consists of 5 consecutive sections. The length of each section (see fig.) Is equal to 1.5 vehicle length + 50 centimeters, the section width is equal to the vehicle length.   • Going round all the pillars, squeeze the clutch and roll to the stop line. It is better not to reach it, it is impossible to cross it.

Exercise "turn in a limited space" or "turn in three steps"

Exercise "turn in confined space"  or "turn in three receptions"contributes to the acquisition of the skills of the vehicle turn by 180 degrees in a space limited in width.

What is a place to make a U-turn:

Under the turn in a limited space, a rectangle is imitated imitating two lanes, limited also to the right and left. The width of a rectangular platform is 2 vehicle lengths, that is, the width of each lane is approximately one vehicle length.

How to correctly perform the exercise "turn in a limited space" or "turn in three steps":

Objective of the exercise: turn around within the boundaries of the exercise with a one-time reverse gear. For re-inclusion of the reverse gear 3 penalty points are awarded.

1. We approach the start line and stop. It is advisable to drive up to it perpendicular, you can slightly shift to the right.

2. We include neutral transfer and a parking brake.

3. Turn on the first gear, turn off the parking brake. We release the clutch pedal not to the end, it is important to ensure a small speed of the car. We begin to move to the far right corner, moderately clinging to the right side.

4. Before reaching about 2 meters to the transverse line of the exercise, we steeply twist the steering wheel to the left until it stops. At this stage, the only permanent landmarks for starting to turn are the cut of your car hood and the transverse line of the exercise. If you wish, you can adapt to them in training.

5. We are moving to the left border of the exercise. Stopping at her turn on the rear gear and begin to move back. Important!  At the very beginning of the movement unscrew the steering wheel all the way to the right!

6. We return to the corner from which we have just arrived. We stop, turn on the first gear, and start moving to the “stop” line. When moving backwards, it is not always necessary to reach the stop, constantly evaluating the opportunity to start moving to the “finish” ahead of time.

7. Stop at the stop line. We include neutral transmission and parking brake. The car must be fully in the second half of the exercise. It is not allowed to find the left rear of the car in the starting half.

Common mistakes when performing the exercise "turn in a limited space" or "turn in three steps":

1. Early began to turn, that is, early began to turn the steering wheel to the left, not reaching the middle. In this case, there is not enough space to go out and stop in front of the stop line.
